To confirm, IOS APIs are not part of SRE-V.

However, you have 2 options for accessing IOS commands from applications running on SRE-V.

The first option is to use the Web Services Management Agent (WSMA) feature in IOS. For more information see http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/netmgmt/configuration/guide/nm_cfg_wsma_ps6441_TSD_Products_Configuration_Guide_Chapter.html

The 2nd option would be to use the new One Platform Kit (onePK) APIs. See http://developer.cisco.com/web/onepk for more information on onePK.

We are starting Controlled Availability for the onePK APIs on the ISR G2 in April.  If you are interested in participating in the onePK Controlled Availability, please contact me directly – jovoss@cisco.com&lt;mailto:jovoss@cisco.com&gt;

Sorry for the confusion. I agree we need to improve that section of the user’s guide.

The external NIC is directly attached to the SRE module and therefore outside the control of IOS. This is why it has to be assigned through vSphere client.

By the way, you do not have to create a new vSwitch if you do not want to. You can also assign the external NIC to either of the pre-configured vSwitches (0/1).

However, please do not remove the existing NIC on vSwitch 0 – this is required to provide internal communication from the ESXi host to IOS.

If this NIC/connection is disabled, a watchdog in IOS will kick in and re-boot the ESXi host. If for some reason, though, you want to disable this interface, you can do so, but you need to disable the heartbeat reset in IOS.

See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/services_modules/sre_v/2.0/user/guide/vsphere.html#wp1086226

For more information on disabling the heartbeat reset.

Hi Brett!

So based on your answer, the only way to configure the external interface on a service module running SRE-V is by using vClient and creating a vSwitch that is connected to vmnic0.

I was a bit confused by the "SRE-V 2.0.1 Installation and Configuration Guide" as it seemed to indicate to me that you can provision the external interface from the Cisco IOS CLI , but evidently that is not the case.

I suppose the the reason why the commands for configuring the external interface are the same as the commands for configuration are the same is that regardless of whether you are using the router's backplane or the external interface for communication, you still have to configure the management interface on the SRE before you can connect to it with vClient and then create the vSwitch on vmnic0.

Thank you so much for your reply.

    <summary type="html">Hi John,

When the people on the ESXi forums talk about the ¿free¿ version of ESXi, they mean the version of ESXi that does not contain API support or vCenter support. This is the vSphere Hypervisor version of ESXi. To get API support or vCenter support, you need the equivalent of a vSphere Essentials, vSphere Standard, or vSphere Enterprise license.

Please note that the license for the basic version ¿ i.e., vSphere Hypervisor ¿ is ¿Free¿ from VMware but maintenance/support from VMware is not.

Since Cisco re-sells and supports the vSphere Hypervisor software as SRE-V, Cisco has a different license model than VMware for this software. I.e., Cisco charges a license fee for the vSphere Hypervisor license, but maintenance/support is included ¿free¿ as part of the router SMARTNet contract which is ultimately lower cost for Cisco customers than the VMware license/support model. The license Cisco sells as FL-SRE-V-HOST is vSphere Hypervisor; to confirm, this license does not include any of the API support or vCenter support in other VMware licenses.

In order to be able to use the vSphere APIs/vCenter support, you will need to purchase the FL-SRE-V-VC-UPG= license for your module. This will upgrade your license to the equivalent of vSphere Essentials.

If you need this support for new modules, then the FL-SRE-V-HOSTVC license is the correct license to purchase instead of FL-SRE-V-HOST

--------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
I'm running a licensed version of SRE-V/ESXi 4.1 on an SM-SRE-910. I was hoping to use the command line vSphere CLI to run virtual machine operations (e.g vmware-cmd &lt;config_file_path&gt; stop) instead of having to use vSphere vClient from Windows. I ran stop/start against a VM and received the following error message

Operation cannot be performed:
SOAP Fault:
-----------
Fault string: fault.RestrictedVersion.summary
Fault detail: RestrictedVersionFault

After searching the vmware community, most reported this error condition when using a free version of ESXi, which isn't the case for me, since I do have a licensed version. Did I miss a configuration step? Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks.
John

Can you confirm if the customer purchased a SRE-V license? We can look up the license information, but we¿d need to know the following:

- Customer name

- Order date

- Customer Purchase Order (PO) number or Cisco Sales Order (SO) number for the licenses purchased

If you only have the customer name and order date, I can try and track down the license.

Can you share the name of the application that you are looking into supporting? Also, is the requirement for Nehalem based on the software running in a virtual environment (e.g., ESXi) or running on a native OS.

The reason I ask is that VMware normally requires a Nehalem class processor as a minimum for supporting vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi).

However, in the case of SRE-V, we were able to work with VMware through our OEM agreement to provide support for our distribution of vSphere Hypervisor on the specific Intel Core 2 Solo/Duo processors on the SRE700/SRE900 modules.

Hi Ismail,

The physical core processor along with other specifications of the SRE modules is provided on our web page here.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps10598/data_sheet_c78-553913.html

You can review more details about the SRE-900 core processor via this link.

Regarding the 910 modules, yes it is an upgrade from the 900 module in that the disk rpm has increased from 5400 to 7200 an I/O performance increase of 2x to 3x.

Thanks,

Brett

I thought there was some heartbeat command that had to be disabled to prevent the reload of the SRE with the router. I have dealt with early betas up to the current beta so I may be remembering old stuff. I know that with my current configuration the router reload does reload the SRE.

Subject: New Message from Jay Childs in Service Ready Engine
Virtualization - Technical Questions: TPM for VM Encryption

Jay Childs has created a new message in the forum "Technical Questions":

--------------------------------------------------------------
I have been experimenting with encrypting the guest OS on SRE via
Bitlocker. To do this, it is necessary to eliminate Bitlocker's TPM
(Trusted Platform Module) chip requirement via Windows group policy
settings and use a storage-media based encryption key. So far I have
been able to implement bitlocker by storing an encryption key on a small
non-encrypted HDD partition in the guest OS, as well as via a floppy
drive image stored in the hypervisor's data store.

My question is - is there a TPM chip on the SRE module at all? If not,
would it be possible to use something like a Cisco R200-TPM-1 module to
impart TPM functionality to the SRE module?

On a related issue, another alternative for Bitlocker is to use a USB
memory stick to supply the encrypted OS with the required key. I have
been able to get my guest OS to see a USB memory stick, but it does not
appear that the USB drivers are loaded early enough in the VM boot
process to allow the use of USB memory for the bitlocker key. Is there
a way to force the USB driver to load earlier so that the VM can use
this for the OS startup encryption key?

into adding the link. You can download the GA version from the download
software link in the link below. The file you need to download is the
sre-v-k9.smv.1.0.1.zip file.

Once you download it please unzip the file in your ftp server and do sre
install as the instructions in the user guide.

Thanks,

Radhika

Virtualization - SRE-V Beta Testing: RE: New Message from Radhika

Tom Clark has created a new message in the forum "SRE-V Beta Testing":
--------------------------------------------------------------
So I notice the SRE-V was silently made GA without an announcement to
this forum? Odd....

I looked at the web page you mention below and there are considerably
more files to be downloaded than were available for the beta and not a
lot of description of what they are and which are required.

I don't see how to get the supporting IOS code at all.

We would like to support SRE-V in an upcoming release of our product
next month. The poor coordination of the announcement has jeopardized
this.

Can you please let me know where to download the appropriate files so
that we can qualify on the GA code?

Also, what provisions are there for licensing the GA code for test
purposes. Are the temporary licenses still available or would we have to
purchase licenses? If the latter, how can we expedite that and gain
appropriate discounts?

Thanks,

Tom

STEVEN BOLTON has created a new message in the forum "SRE-V Beta
Testing":
--------------------------------------------------------------
1.) Where can we find and be kept up to date as to the expected release
dates of the "General Deployment" SRE ESXi and supporting IOS code?

2.) Where can we find and be kept up to date as to the expected release
dates of SRE ESXi code that will support RAID for the two hard drives?

I looked at the Blog, Knowledge Base and Wiki links. They are
practically empty. It may just be my access rights.

The UCS CIMC Express software will be available in November for Beta.  We are working on the docs now, and I can provide you with a draft copy for review.

When the production version of SRE-V starts shipping, the VMware 60 day eval license included with the Beta image will be replaced with a permanent VMware license.

However, to continue to use the SRE-V VMware software after the 60 day SRE eval time period runs out, you will need to install a valid SRE-V license from Cisco even after you install the production version of SRE-V.

    <summary type="html">
It would appear that a Cisco license pak is required to run ESXi on the SRE platform. I was initially told (account team) that ESXi would be a no cost license and that the license costs would come from VMWare. I placed one of our free ESXi licenses on the ESXi server and it limited the services down to what the free version ESXi is entitled. However, the SRE shell still shows a temporary license, so I would imagine the two are not related. Is this just due to the Beta or will there be some charge to use ESXi on the SRE? The licensing also seemed to support SRE-Vhost and possibly other Cisco Modules at the same time like the wireless controller for instance. We were also told only one application would be on the SRE at a time so you have to pick or choose. Has this changed? I know that directions change and I was just trying to see where things are headed.
I apologize for the confusion.  A VMware ESXi license will be provided by Cisco under the SRE-V license when the production SRE-V software is release.  This VMware license is not included in the Beta image.

There will be no need to purchase a ESXi license, instead, you will need to purchase a SRE-V license from Cisco to continue using the ESXi software beyond the 60 day eval/temporary license you are currently seeing in the SRE-V host.

In addition, there is no need to purchase support from VMware - support for the ESXi software will be provided by Cisco under your router SMARTNet contract as long as you have the SRE-V license(s) for your SRE module(s).

The SRE-V license is mutually exclusive of other Cisco services for SRE such as WAAS, Wireless LAN Contoller, etc.  I.e., if you install SRE-V on a SRE module, then that module will be fully dedicated to SRE-V.

You have the option at a later point in time to replace the SRE-V software with another Cisco service (e.g., Wireless LAN controller), but that will require you to remove the SRE-V software and install and license the Wireless LAN controller software on that SRE module.

We are working on supporting multiple Cisco services concurrently in the future on top of SRE-V, but availability will depend on the resource utilization of the particular Cisco service and whether or not it can run virtualized.

I recommend we set up a meeting with your account team to make sure we address your particular situation in terms of the SRE-V licensing.

Best Regards,
