how to get root permission?

Hi,
We try to open log file in system. When we tried to burn new file into Cius advice, we found we are not root account for Cius device now, we have no root permission to do instructions  such as "chmod". Do we have some method to enable root account now or just for temporary use?

Root access is not available outside of Cisco engineering or support.

Now that the CIUS has finally been abandoned. It's time to allow it's users root access so we may update it and make this great video phone relevant.

Please post the method for us to obtain root access.

When developers have root access... it also means giving them the ability to read decryption keys and other application specific data.

One might consider the kinda effects before granting root acces

The Cisco Cius was designed from the beginning to be a secure device.  The device is still a supported product and we have no plans, now, or in the future to release firmware that would allow root access or otherwise compromise the security of our product.

I'm not sure if you're keeping up with current events but development for the CIUS is no longer supported:

Here's a quote from OJ Winge - SVP of TelePresence Technology at Cisco:

Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what’s available today. However, as we evaluate the market further, we will continue to offer Cius in a limited fashion to customers with specific needs or use cases.


I know it says development but when you allow root access you no longer have to support something your company has completely abandoned.

The CIUS is running Android 2.2. The device would work very well on a newer version of Android. The the community BYOD the CIUS.

I am indeed up to date on what OJ said.  My team, CDN, TAC and others will continue to support the Cius for existing customers as we have in the past.  From our point of view nothing has changed.

If it is still supported then why is their no way to fix the Android Market to Google Play problem, as Google Play auto updates Android market, then out of the blue, the Cius will take time to boot (may do it on the nex boot, or a week or two of booting) and then Google play gets magically reverted to Android Market and the a lot of Google.Vending error messages start appearing.

Calling support gets this is an EOL and not supported, if it's EOL and not supported that is a big contradiction to your statement above not only that the integration of communication has been superseded by Jabber so could be installed on a clean Android why doesn't Cisco then provide the Android 4 (vanilla un modded version) where we can add Jabber and create the Dock as an APK?

The only version of Cius that has been announced as End of Sale is the 4G version.

and, Last Date of Support:July 17, 2015
 
Dates for the wifi-only Cius have not been announced.
 
If can send me (privately) the TAC Case number, I can try get to the bottom of why you were told this was not supported.

There are a lot of these manufactured units out there gathering cobwebs.  It is kind of a shame that the platform hardware is being left to essentially moulder into forced obsolence by the inability to update the device to run anything relevant.  We should take a page from the HP TouchPad saga and do what we can to open doors and perhaps allow the public to take up development, including releasing sources for propietary drivers that existed on the platform.  I know there was some internal focus on an Android 4.x build before development was discontinued.  Intel just released the JB port for Atom processors into the wild.

This overpriced, underperforming product is redered usless with an Operating system that is beyond out of date. This is by far the worst I have seen from Cisco from a product support statndpoint. If Cisco chooses to discontinue a product, they have that right, however many people paid a lot of money for a product that promised so much and delivered so little. 
I am appauled not only by the "early" end of developemnt announcemnt but also by the lack of any other announcements relating to software updates. If in fact the WIFI version is still active, then I would excpect an announcement on when the Jelly Bean update will be available. Of course I won't hold my breath.

Can we get an update on this? I've got a few of these tablets that are essentially paperweights due to the lack of support. I'd like to be able to install a more modern OS so that they can at least provide some functionality. The way that these devices were handled was largely a debacle. If Cisco wan't to retain any good will from the people that purchased these, they should allow root access.

This is a developer alias, designed for developer questions.  For your question/feedback, I would suggest you talk to your Account Manager, or I can get you in contact with someone from product team.  As stated in multiple places, "Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet from factor", this includes supporting newer versions of Android.
Because of our security features like signed images and immutable system partition, having root access would still not allow you to install other versions of Android.

Perhaps Cisco, may like to learn that the Android OS is as Cisco Marketed it a Opensource OS, Cisco advertised the Cius as an Opensource Tablet aimed at Business users, not very opensource when it cant be used other than what Cisco thinks is good enough, we're not asking Cisco to develop it further, "We" (the users) would like to install a newer OS on it and in all firness as Cisco have no further vested interests in the tablet Cisco should issue a wipe file to remove your company confidential OS information as the licence prohibits reverse engineering and make it useable as desired by the end user, this would also fit in with Cisco's enviromental responable immage.
