Cisco Unified Presence provides customers with the ability to leverage Instant Messaging and Availability within the enterprise and operates in-conjunction with Cisco Unified Communication Manager which provides various telephony and video services. This application delivers on the ability for dispersed enterprises to work closely together in providing the tools for a business to be more efficient and productive. Using information, from such sources as Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Cisco Jabber, Cisco AJAX XMPP Library(CAXL), and Exchange Calendar, Cisco Unified Presence can improve productivity as it helps users connect with colleagues more efficiently by determining the most effective means for collaborative communication.
Cisco or third-party applications can integrate with Cisco Unified Presence and provide services that improve the end-user experience and efficiency The core components of the Cisco Unified Presence server consist of:

The Jabber Extensible Communications Platform (XCP), which handles presence, instant messaging, roster, routing, policy, and federation management.

The Rich Presence Service, which handles presence state gathering, network-based rich presence composition, and presence-enabled routing functionality

Support for ad-hoc group chat storage with persistent chat and message archiving handled to an external database.
Cisco Unified Presence allows developers access to instant messaging, availability and roster management via XMPP, BOSH, SIP/SIMPLE, SOAP, and REST.
