Yes, the remote deploy is fully functional. Once you set up an FTP site, you will get all the files and folders you would get if you deployed locally. It does, however, use FTP and right now there is no support for a more secure mechanism such as SFTP.

So if you set up a site, you should be able to deploy remotely.
