Cisco Jabber and the SDKs
Cisco Jabber describes the Cisco Unified Communications (UC) capabilities, which enable Cisco users to have easy access to presence, instant messaging (IM), voice, video, voice messaging, desktop sharing, and conferencing via their desktop, phone, tablet or browser.
Whichever way users are accessing Jabber, they will get a consistent experience across platforms, devices and on-premises & cloud-based deployment alternatives, so they can choose their preferred options as they please.
From a technical perspective, the Cisco Jabber family includes and builds upon Cisco Unified Personal Communicator, Cisco Mobile and WebEx Connect, taking advantage of intelligence in Cisco networks and Cisco Unified Communications Manager Call Control to deliver secure, clear and reliable communications. This results in a greater user acceptance and less risk. It also integrates with other Cisco Collaboration solutions, TelePresence video, WebEx Meetings, security AnyConnect secure mobile clients, etc.
The Cisco Jabber Application is the client installed on the user's desktop, phone or tablet, enabling access to presence, instant messaging (IM), voice, video, voice messaging, desktop sharing, and conferencing. The client can be used with on-premise or cloud-based UC services.
There are currently four installations of the Cisco Jabber client:
- Cisco Jabber - for Windows devices
- Cisco Jabber - for Mac devices
- Cisco Jabber - for iPad devices
- Cisco Jabber - for iPhone devices
- Cisco Jabber - for Android devices
The Cisco Jabber SDK is the name we use to comprise all of the SDKs and APIs available to developers that help them integrate presence, instant messaging (IM), voice, video, voice messaging, desktop sharing, and conferencing into their applications.
It isn't one SDK, but an over-riding family name comprising the different developer tool kits:
|Cisco Jabber SDK for Web||a toolkit comprising four sets of interfaces, enabling a browser-based app to be embedded and fully-integrated with Cisco's Jabber capabilities.|
|Cisco Jabber SDK for Mobile (coming very soon)||an SDK enabling a native mobile app to be embedded and fully-integrated with Cisco Jabber capabilities.|
Other SDKs are being developed for forthcoming Jabber products, so please join our mailing list to ensure you're kept up-to-date on all Jabber SDK developments.
The main aim of this Jabber Developer website is to provide developers with access to the components of the Jabber SDK for Web, and offer help and guidance to integrate, test and promote their Jabber-enabled browser implementations.
Take a look around the site, starting with the Jabber SDK for Web page.
A Jabber SDK for Mobile will soon be available, enabling a native mobile app to be embedded and fully-integrated with Cisco's collaboration suite of rich functionality.
Please join our mailing list to ensure you're kept up-to-date on this and other Jabber SDK developments.
Meanwhile, some of our partner organizations are focused on offering customizable solutions in the mobile space today that leverage Cisco Unified Communications. Please take a look at them.
And did you know that it's already possible to launch the Cisco Jabber client (on the user's desktop, phone or tablet) from within your own browser-based application by using simple URI handlers? To learn more about how to leverage these "click-to-voice" and "click-to-IM" capabilities, visit our page on cross-launching the Cisco Jabber client.
New Cisco Jabber Guest enables Cisco customers to provide interactive, instant voice, high-definition video, and data sharing from public websites and mobile applications.
Guests simply click a URL link, web site, or mobile application to start the interaction with the customer.
Developers will be able to build the Jabber Guest capabilities into web sites or mobile applications using APIs (coming soon) or simply use the in-built Jabber Guest client experiences (already available).
If you're interested in building the capabilities into your native apps, why not register to become part of the Early Adopter Program (EAP) and try out the SDKs? (The EAP is run by the Cisco Collaboration User Group. It's free to join. If you're not already a member, find out more and get involved).
If the EAP isn't for you, please make sure you've signed up with us to receive updates, and we'll let you know as soon as the SDKs are available on this site.
