Hi Thomas,

I have a question related to this topic. We are currently developping a web based Jabber client (no Jabber for windows here), and we are wondering if it would be possible to place call (like you described earlier).
Let's assume you are logged in the web client on Chrome (or FF doesn't matter), then you open a second Tab and make a search on google. Would it be possible to highlight (or whatever) a number in google result and ask the jabber web client to place a call to this number ?
Is this something that can be realized with the SDK. Will it ask any installer on the machine, or can it be done like the Jabber client (with registry keys) ?

Thanks for your help
Regards

Hi J,
Working on a JabberSDK-based Chrome extension would be really great, there is an internal proof-of-concept which has not been updated for a while unfortunately
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oI6Pxa-5zDk
What IE/Firefox plugins are you talking about ?
Thanks, Thomas

Hi Christopher,

Sorry my fault, I did not understand you had Jabber for Windows already deployed. The Jabber client supports what Windows calls protocol handlers, see here.
This allows web pages to make clickable elements to start a call or chat with HTML like
<a href="tel:1234">Call 1234 with Jabber</a>
<a href'="im:otheruser@domain.com">Chat with otheruser</a>
<a href'="xmpp:otheruser@domain.com">Chat with otheruser</a>

The im: and xmpp: handlers support semi-colon separated jabber ids to start group chats.
When clicking such links, Jabber displays a popup "do you want to call/chat with", click Yes to start the call/chat.
This was tested on Windows 7 in IE, Firefox and Chrome.

There is a known issue about handlers not installed on some machine with UAC (User Account Control) enabled. If not working, please double-check the registry (Start regedit.exe) has the following entries
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\im
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\tel
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\xmpp

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes, Thomas

It would be ideal for any page and not just jabber enabled sites. This way if my users are doing "research" they can just click to dial wherever they see a number. Before rolling out jabber everyone basically used skype and they have become used to dialing numbers by clicking from their browser.

Right now we're predominantly an internet explorer firm (i know) but it would be cool to have functionality across chrome and firefox eventually but explorer first.

Where can I find this prototype chrome extension for click to call functionality?

Thanks again!

The Jabber SDK exposes APIs to allow applications do what you describe.
Would you like clickable numbers on any page or just jabber-enabled sites ? Do you have any particular browser in mind ?
