Introduction

The Cisco® Network Building Mediator ("Mediator") is the industry's first solution that extends the network as a platform to transform the way buildings are built, operated, and experienced. The Mediator:

  • Helps reduce energy usage across global operations
  • Leverages Cisco's expertise in collaboration, convergence, and security to foster sustainable energy use
  • Provides flexible integration of new technologies that deliver energy efficiency, clean energy, and environmental stewardship
It is through this unique network centric platform for building management, that 3rd party applications can integrate with building systems using the mediators API. The mediator API is implemented using an industry accepted open standard called XML/RPC and supports version 1 and version 2 of the standard.

Benefits

  • Allows third-party applications to gain access to all data-points across all building systems such as (HVAC, Lighting, Power, Physical Security, etc.)
  • Allows read and write capabilities to all data-points based on users privileges
  • Allows the setup of very granular role-based-access-control when application users access building system data-points
  • Normalizes the access method to heterogeneous systems (like MODBUS, LON, BACNET, CBUS, etc.) for IP based application environments. All applications can now talk to the building systems using XML/RPC over IP.
  • Allows applications to efficiently poll large groups of data-points using CoV (Change of Value) methods
  • Allows applications to "Discover" the entire building system architecture that is expressable in the mediator using an XML-Schema
  • Allows applications to read alarm status and trend-log-files
  • Allows a single point of access to a network/hierarchy of building system data-points that may be spread across geographically dispersed sites.
