We ran into some performance issues when testing windows under ESXi so we wanted to test it natively. When we tried to install using the driver posted on the cisco web page, it found the driver but said it was unable to install it. So is Windows 2008 R2 supported natively during beta and if so, can somebody help me with the install.
Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken,

Yes, Windows 2008 R2 is natively supported. Could you tell me what is the exact error that you saw during installation? (A screenshot if possible.) You said you had ESXi installed on this blade before. Did you configure drives in any specific raid modes? Did you also try to clear raid configurations before trying the windows installation?

Thanks,
Nithya

Nithya,

I will need to take a photo since the error message was on the console. It was not able to install using the KVM but maybe that was because I had the monitor and keyboard plugged in at the same time. I will clear the raid configuration, and re-install it. I am using RAID 5. If it doesnt install this time, I will let you know with a picture.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for your response. Could you follow the steps below before trying to install windows 2008 2 natively?

1. Clear raid configuration (From Inventory-> Storage tab->Virtual Drives)
2. Go to physical drive tab, all the 3 disks status will now show "Unconfigured good". please change their state individually for all the PDs to JBOD first (by click change state from the PD row's drop box) and then change it back to "Unconfigured Good"
3. Then go back to Virtual Drives tab and create the raid5 array.

After this step try to install the Windows 2008 R2. Let me know if you still see the error.

Currently "clear raid" option does not entirely clear and reset the partitions that ESXi has already created. So we give this workaround before fresh installations.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Nithya

Nithya,

Okay, got as far as step 3 above. When I try to create the raid group by selecting a drive, the add button does not move the drive from left to right. I used using IE 9.0. However, it does work in FireFox 11.0. But then I couldn't use FireFox to open a KVM because of some sort of Java error. Says to upgrade but I have a higher version than it requires.

Nithya,

Still doesn't work. There is no place here to attach a file or picture, so not sure how to get the error message to you.

-Ken

Hi Ken,

You might want to use control + click to select the drive (1, 2 or 3) and then move it over to the right box in IE case. In mozilla firefox case, though you have the latest browser version, adobe flash plugin version has to be the latest too in order for vKVM to work. Please check from abobe website and upgrade if necessary. I have flash version: 11.1.102.63 in my firefox and it seems to work fine.

Thanks,
Nithya

Brett,

Would you be able to point Ken to a shared server so he can drop his snapshot there?

Hi Ken,

Could you in the meanwhile type over the exact error message you saw and is the failure immediately after you install drivers? Or while the drivers are getting installed?

Thanks,
Nithya

It finds the raid controller driver and points to it, then pops up and says: "The [LSI MegaRAID SAS PCI Expess ROMB (E:\megasas2.inf)] device driver could not be installed. Contact your vendor for an updated driver."

Hi Ken,

Please upload your file using the steps below, then let us know the filename.

1. Connect to ftp.cisco.com via anonymous ftp.

2. Files must be uploaded into a folder called 'incoming', which is not visible to anonymous users
If you are using a text-based ftp client, type the command "cd incoming"
If you are using a GUI ftp client such as FileZilla, enter 'incoming' manually as the destination for the remote site

3. Upload the file as normal. You will not be able to see it on the server, as commands to list the files in that folder have been disabled. You may see error messages related to that.

NOTE: You cannot upload a file with the same name more than once as this creates the potential for other users to overwrite the files you have uploaded. If you need to re-upload the same file, either use a new filename or ask the Cisco employee you are working with to remove the file from the server.

Thanks,

Brett

Look for "UCSE Install Failure.jpg". You can delete the others, they got copied up there by mistake.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for sending the snapshot over. My first impression is that the driver file could be wrong. Please grab the file under Drivers option in the following link;

http://developer.cisco.com/group/ucse/docs

Filename: MID 1477491 W2K8 R2 x64 Signed...

and while pointing to the driver , make sure that you point only to the folder and not to individual file within the folder. Try to resume installation after that and let me know if you see the same error as before.

Let me know if you have any more questions regarding this.

Thanks,
Nithya

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the screenshot. Regarding your Windows 2008 R2 installation, which edition are you attempting to install - i.e. Datacenter, Enterprise, Standard ...etc. ?

Thanks,

Brett

Nithya,

Thats where I grabbed the driver from already.

Brett,

Installing Enterprise.

-Ken

Hi Ken,

The snapshot says that you pointed to a .inf file while installing drivers.
Try the folder instead.

Thanks,
Nithya

Hi Ken,

I'd like to confirm your LSI firmware installation as well. Please follow the steps below and send over the data.

1. On the router type: ucse <slot> session bmc
2. When prompted enter user/password as admin/password
3. From BMC prompt type: scope chassis
4. And now type: show storageadapter detail

Thanks,

Brett

Brett,

Here you go:

ucs-eseries login: admin
Password:
ucs-eseries# scope chassis
ucs-eseries /chassis # show storageadapter detail
PCI Slot SLOT-5:
Product Name: LSI MegaRAID SAS 2004 ROMB
Serial Number:
Firmware Package Build: 20.10.1-0092
Product ID: LSI Logic
Battery Status:
Cache Memory Size: 0 MB
ucs-eseries /chassis #

Nitthya,

When you point to the directory, it automatically points to the INF. I have no choice.

Hi Ken,

I tried to reproduce the issue locally but I do not see the same error
message. I want to make sure that the mapping is done correctly. The way I
do it is;

1. I copy the driver folder (downloaded from the beta website) into a
removable usb key.
2. I begin the windows installation, by mapping the windows iso image in the
vKVM.
3. At the point where installation asks for the driver, I plug in the
removable usb key into the local machine (that runs the GUI and vKVM) and
map this Removable Disk from inside the vKVM. I do this by tick marking the
mapped checkbox across "Removable Media" in the vKVM. See snapshot below
from my vkvm;

4. After this step, I go back to the vkvm console, click browse and select
the driver ³folder². See snapshot;

5. After clicking OK, the driver gets installed and I see the following;

Let me know if it still does not work for you. We could do a quick webex to
troubleshoot this further.

Thanks,
Nithya

Sorry, sending again. Copy-paste images did not work. I have now attached the snapshots.
