Brief Introduction

Cisco Universal Power Over Ethernet (Cisco UPOE) is the latest innovation from Cisco with broad, positive implications for many enterprise operations by broadening the network powered device eco system. Cisco UPoE is the first industry solution that allows the consolidation of 60 watts power on a single Ethernet (CAT5E or higher) cable, or in short 60W per access switch port.

Technology Details

The Cisco Catalyst 4500E Series Universal PoE line card (Figure 1) is a breakthrough in technology, offering the following services to customers on the world's most widely deployed modular access platform, the Cisco Catalyst 4500E:

  • 60W per port to enable a variety of end devices such as VDI clients, IP turret systems in trading floors, Cisco Catalyst compact switches in retail/hospitality environments, personal Cisco TelePresence® systems, and physical access control devices
  • EEE providing energy and cost savings to the customer
  • Line-rate throughput at 48Gbps per slot bandwidth
  • PoE capabilities such as powering up 802.11n access points and interactive IP phones compliant with IEEE 802.3 PoE/PoE+ standard
