Deploy your gateways: Introduction
Complete the following instructions to remotely configure, deploy, and manage a supported gateway that is provisioned for use with Cisco GMM. You can also optionally install IOx apps and add devices.
Important: Complete these instructions before powering on or connecting your device to the network. For example, log in to the Cisco GMM Cloud Application, claim the gateways for your organization, and apply the device network settings.
Existing gateways
Existing gateways must be provisioned for GMM using the Gateway Provisioning Tool (GPT).
After provisioning is complete, use the following instructions to remotely configure, deploy, and manage the device.
New gateways
New gateways are already provisioned for use with Cisco GMM. See:
Before you begin
Complete the following before powering on or connecting your gateways to the network.

More Information |
Prepare a deployment plan |
Review the design guide to understand the gateways and network configuration for your organization. Learn more |
Complete all GMM requirements |
The requirements make sure your gateways and network are ready for Cisco GMM deployment. Learn more |
Gather the gateway serial number(s) |
The serial number(s) are located on the back or side panel. Learn more |
Verify that the gateway is entitled for GMM use |
The gateway must also be entitled to use Cisco GMM. This is done by Cisco, and is performed automatically when the gateway is ordered as “cloud managed”. Learn more
Existing gateways can also be provisioned by you, but must also be entitled by sending a support request to Cisco GMM. Click Support in the upper right-hand corner of the browser-based Cisco GMM Cloud Application. Learn more |
Install the correct antennas and cables |
Antennas are required on each gateway for cellular, WiFi/WGB, or GPS connections. See the installation guide for your gateway model and the Cisco Industrial Router Antenna Guide for more information. |
(Optional) Create configuration templates. |
Templates define the gateway network settings and can be applied to multiple gateways. Enter any APN settings, if using a cellular connection. Learn more
The template is selected when you claim the gateway and applied when the gateway is connected to the network. |
Summary steps
- Log in to the Cisco GMM Cloud Application.
- Insert the SIM card or connect the gateway to an Ethernet uplink network.
- Power up the gateway (wait about 5-10 minutes for the gateway and cellular interface to come up).
- Claim the gateways to securely associate them with your organization.
- Be sure to select a gateway that includes the correct WAN Interface setting for Ethernet (No Change) or Cellular.
- Verify the gateway status moves from Registering -> Configuring -> Verifying and finally Healthy. This can take up to 10 minutes.
- Connect subtended devices to the gateway.
Detailed steps
Log in to the Cisco GMM Cloud Application.
Insert the SIM card(s) or connect the gateway to an Ethernet uplink network that supports all network requirements. This connection establishes communication with Cisco GMM.
Ethernet notes
The Ethernet uplink network must support all network requirements.
Select a template with the WAN Interface set to No Change.
Make sure SIM cards are NOT INSTALLED, or a configuration error can occur since the gateway will use whichever interface receives an IP address first.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the following ports to the network:
- IR1101—port GE 0/0/0
- IR807—port FastEthernet 0
- IR809—port GE0
- IR829—port GE1
Cellular notes:
Select a template with the WAN Interface set to Cellular.
If using cellular with a private APN, initially connect the gateway over Ethernet so GMM can push the APN config to the gateway. After the config is applied, remove the Ethernet uplink (this is not required if using a public APN).
To install the SIM card, see the following:
Power on the Gateway. Learn more
The gateway will call home and register with the Cisco GMM cloud.
Claim the Gateway(s)
Claiming a gateway reserves the device for exclusive use by your organization and applies a template that includes network settings such as the APN settings.
You can select a default or saved template, create a new one. Learn more
If using a cellular connection, select a template with the WAN interface set to "Cellular".

Physically install the gateway using the gateway installation instructions.
Verify that the gateway status moves from Registering -> Configuring -> Verifying and finally Healthy. This can take up to 10 minutes.
If using cellular with a private APN, you can disconnect the Ethernet connection used for initial setup.
Connect subtended devices to the gateway.
Troubleshooting
Error |
Description |
Resolution |
"SerialNumber is invalid identifier" |
The gateway is not yet enabled in the Cisco GMM portal for cloud management. |
Contact your Cisco Kinetic support representative to have this enabled. |
"SerialNumber exists in a current organization" |
The gateway has already been claimed in the same organization. |
Check the Gateway page to locate the gateway with the same serial number. |
"SerialNumber exists in a different organization" |
You are trying to claim a Gateway that is already claimed and belongs to a different organization / customer. |
Check the serial number to make sure you are typing it in correctly and that the Gateway belongs to you. If so contact your Cisco representative to resolve the ownership. |
The gateway status is not healthy |
Wait for up to 30 minutes for the gateway status to change to Healthy. |
If the gateway is in "Registering" state for more than 30 minutes after claiming it, verify that the network can reach the outside world. For example, ping an outside address from a laptop connected to the same network. Also verify the Requirements. |
|
|
If the gateway uses a cellular connection, verify that the correct antenna is connected to the gateway. |
|
|
If the gateway uses a cellular connection, verify that the SIM card is enabled by the network provider. Some SIM cards need to be activated with a PIN before use. Follow the instructions from the SIM provider. |
|
|
Signal strength and other issues can require up to 30 minutes for Gateways using SIM card to establish connectivity. |
|
|
If a gateway is stuck in "Verifying" state, a firewall setting in the Ethernet network(if you are using Ethernet as the backhaul) may be preventing the gateway from building a tunnel to the Cisco GMM portal. Work with your network administrator to verify that the required network ports are open. |
|
|
Check the Cisco GMM status page to see if the portal you are using is processing the claims. |
|
|
If you still have issues bringing the gateway online, contact TAC. |
