Specifications At-A-Glance
The HDK is an example reference design that is intended to be used for prototyping purposes only. It is not intended to be a shipping production hardware module. Final module design may incorporate some of the HDK hardware blocks if necessary, but mirroring the HDK design is not mandatory.
Dual switched GBE ports with 802.15af PoE PSE
- Marvell 88E6321 Ethernet Switch
- Microsemi PD69104B PSE controller
- Maximum total PSE output limited to 14W or less, subject to total HDK power draw and AP input power
Host AP Interface
The HDK host connector is a standard PCIe x4 card edge with Cisco-custom signal assignments.
The HDK utilizes some of the host interface signals, specifically:
- 12VDC power input
- RGMII Ethernet connectivity
- Host master reset
- Host I2C
Not all of the host signals are used by the HDK. However, they are accessible through headers for development purposes.
IDPROM
- 24C02 serial EEPROM, Factory programmed for module identification
Onboard Sensors
- Texas Instruments OPT3001 I2C Ambient Light Sensor
- Texas Instruments HDC1008 I2C Temperature and Humidity Sensor
Power Output
- Single USB Type-A 5 V convenience power ouput
- 12VDC barrel jack convenience power output
- 12VDC barrel jack alternate power input for standalone offline development
LED indicators
- RJ45 Ethernet link status
- PSE On/Off status
- XBee Association/RSSI status
External Single Board Computer (SBC) and Module Mounting Support
Predrilled mounting holes and sockets are provided for the following SBCs to ensure a tidy one-piece assembly.

Approximate Dimensions
- Rev2: 5.7" x 6.8" (LW)
- Rev1: 6.6" x 5.2" (LW)
Environmental
- Designed to operate as a prototype device in a lab ambient, open-air environment.
- Non-operating (storage) temperature: -30 to 70C°(-22 to 158F°)
- Operating temperature: 0 to 30C°
- Operating humidity: 10 to 90% (non-condensing)
- Operating altitude: 3000 meters (9843 feet)
- Compliance: not tested
Usage as a Standalone Device
The HDK PCBA also can be used as a standalone switch with PoE PSE without the resources of a host access point for initial offline development. The following features of the PCBA can be used for such a deployment:
- External 12VDC, 20W minimum, power must be provided
- 2-port 1GE switch with 802.3af PoE PSE
- Temperature and humidity sensor
- XBee radio support
Note: The total HDK module power is limited to 18W when connected to a Cisco Aironet 3800 series AP powered by uPoE. The total power drawn by the HDK board, PSE loads, and attached modules should not exceed this power limit.
