Upgrade EI Agents

All EI Agents must be updated to the latest version to ensure full feature compatibility with the Cisco EI cloud software. For example, upgrading the EI Agent allows you to use new connection types for Assets and Data Destinations and perform all Data Policy management actions.

In this release, you must manually upgrade the EI Agents using GMM/FND/Local Manager. Because this upgrade process removes all data policy information from the agent, you must also download a summary of your Data Policies, un-deploy the polices, upgrade the EI Agents and then redeploy the policies to the same EI Agents.

  1. Go to EI Agents and click Export Policy Status to download a summary of all Data Policies deployed on your EI Agents.
  2. Un-deploy all running Data Rules and Data Logic from all EI Agents:
    1. Go to Data Polices and then click Data Rules or Data Logic.
    2. Un-deploy every Data Rule from all EI Agents.
See Undeploy Data Rules and Undeploy Data Logic.
  3. Download the EI Agent software.
  4. Upgrade the EI Agent(s) using the appropriate Cisco Network Device Management software, such as GMM/FND/Local Manager.
    • For example, when using Cisco GMM to upgrade EI Agents, add the newer version to GMM and then use deployment policies to upgrade the EI Agents on the network devices. See GMM Application Management.
  5. After the EI Agent upgrades are complete, the Agents will reconnect to Cisco EI.
  6. In Cisco EI, click EI Agents and verify that the EI Agent status is "Online".
  7. Open the CSV file you downloaded in step 1, find the list of policies that were deployed on a specific EI Agent and redeploy them to the same EI Agent:
    1. Click Data Polices and then click Data Rules or Data Logic.
    2. Re-deploy each Data Policy. See Deploy Data Rules and Deploy Data Logic.
    3. Compare the Running State of the policies to the pre-upgrade status in the CSV file (column C):
      • Running: All data policies on EI Agent transferring data from assets to destinations.
      • Error: At least one policy instance deployed on this EI Agent are in error state and data is not flowing for any configured assets.
      • Unknown: The EI Agent is offline. The policy status cannot be retrieved.
  8. After the EI Agents are updated, and the Data Policies are re-deployed, your system should operate as before and you will be able to use the new connection types.

Upgrade EI Agents (new)

EI Agents can be upgraded without manual intervention.

  • Upgrade EI Agent for a single device — In the Manage EI Agent page, in the device row, click EDM EI Agent under Actions and click Upgrade Version.
  • Bulk upgrade of EI Agent — In the Manage EI Agent page, select the required devices to upgrade and click Upgrade Version.

Once the upgrade process is initiated for an EI Agent, all the policies deployed on that EI Agent are undeployed and deployed again after a successful upgrade.

In case of any failure, EI shows the Agent status. For detailed error message, you can check the details in EDM (EDM -> Applications -> app-name -> instances).
