IR8xx IOS GPS configuration

Before one can start using GPS service, one needs to configure IOS to start streaming the GPS NMEA data.Below are the steps

  • Connect GPS antenna to the IR8xx router
  • Configure IOS GPS feature and ensure GPS fix

GPS Antenna

The Cisco 4G indoor/outdoor, active GPS antenna (GPS-ACT-ANTM-SMA) can be physically connected to the Cisco Integrated Services Routers (ISRs) and Cisco 4G Enhanced High-Speed WAN Interface Cards (EHWICs) to receive GPS broadcasts from satellites.

In order to procure a suitable GPS antenna and connecting to any IR8xx router, please follow this link

IOS GPS Configuration

Check if the GPS feature is already enabled on the router by running the below command on the IOS console:

    IR829#show cellular 0 gps
  • Follow the below steps to configure the GPS feature on the IR 8xx router *
    iox-ir809-03(config)#controller cellular 0
    iox-ir809-03(config-controller)#lte gps ?
    iox-ir809-03(config-controller)#lte gps enable
    iox-ir809-03(config-controller)#lte gps mode standalone
    iox-ir809-03(config-controller)#lte gps nmea serial

After adding the configuration. Do a modem power cycle using the following command.

iox-ir809-03#test cellular 0 modem-power-cycle

Please ensure that the GPS antenna has a good line of sight to the sky for getting a good fix to the GPS satellites.

When the GPS feature has a successful fix, the IOS CLI shows GPS data as below

    IR829#show cellular 0 gps
