Phase 1 - Unboxing, Installing, and Connecting the Router

The following steps describe how to install and connect your router and verify that it is properly connected.

  1. Perform the initial installation and power up of the router by following the instructions beginning with the “Connecting a Terminal or PC to the Console Port” section in one of the following documents:
  • For the Cisco ISR4K — Hardware Installation Guide for Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers, which is available at: Click here

  • For the Cisco ASR1K — Cisco ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers, which is available at: Click here

  1. If needed, use the links in the Hardware Installation Guide for your router to load the required USB-to-serial port driver for the console port connection.

  2. If your laptop or PC warns you that you do not have the proper drivers to communicate with the router, you can obtain them from your computers manufacturer, or go here

  3. Determine how your computer mapped the new COM port that was created when you installed the USB-to-serial port driver. You need this information to appropriately configure your serial communications program in the next step.

  4. Start your serial communications program and connect to the router. The console port settings to use for the serial connection are: 9600 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, no flow control. After a minute or so you should see boot messages in the serial communications program window.

  5. Verify that your computer is properly connected to the router by checking the LEDs on the router as described in the “Verifying Connections” section in the Hardware Installation Guide for your router (see links in step 1). The following figure illustrates how your router connects to your PC. This figure does not show power cabling.
