Installing CML 2.1

CML 2.1 supports two deployment options: virtual machine and bare metal installation. If you have an existing CML 2.0 installation, you may also perform an in-place upgrade of your existing system to the 2.1 release. Be sure to download the correct files for your chosen deployment option.

To deploy CML 2.1 as a virtual machine (VM), you must download both the controller OVA file and the reference platform ISO file. The OVA file is the CML server VM with the CML UI, controller, and other application software. The ISO file contains the VM images for the different node types that you can run in your CML labs. CML VM deployments are only tested and supported on specific releases of VMware products. Before you deploy the CML VM, ensure that you have installed and are running a supported release of VMware Player, Workstation, Fusion, or ESXi.

To deploy CML 2.1 on a bare metal server, download both the controller ISO file and the reference platform ISO file. The controller ISO file is a bootable DVD image that will install CML on your system, including a base Linux OS, the CML UI, controller, and other application software. CML bare metal deployments are only tested and supported on specific UCS hardware. See the System Requirements for more information.

If you have an existing CML 2.0 installation, you may upgrade to CML 2.1. For the in-place upgrade, download the CML controller RPM file. You may also download the new reference platform ISO file if you would like access to the new reference platform images. Upgrades from CML 1.x to CML 2.x are not supported. If you have an existing 1.x installation of CML or Cisco VIRL Personal Edition, you will have to migrate to a new installation of CML-Enterprise or CML-Personal 2.1.

CML 2.1 provides updated versions of the reference platforms. We recommend using the latest reference platforms with any new CML installation. For example, if you are deploying a new CML 2.1 VM from the OVA or performing a new CML 2.1 bare metal installation, use the new refplat-20201110-fcs.iso file. However, if you upgraded an existing CML instance to the 2.1 release, then we recommend continuing to use the original reference platform ISO from the older release even after upgrading.
