Add devices to a gateway
Devices are assets or sensors that are connected to the gateway. The devices generate data and can be managed directly using a remote VPN connection, or using the Cisco GMM Cloud Application.
You can discover devices that are connected to the gateway via WiFi or Ethernet. You can also manually enter the device name and UUID .
Tip: Add devices to the gateway before installing fog apps, if possible. Adding a device restarts the gateway's running applications.
Prerequisites
- A supported web browser installed on your computer.
- A network configured for the required services and ports. This allows your devices and gateways to securely send and receive data with Cisco GMM.
- DHCP is required for devices to be discovered. Devices with a static IP address cannot be discovered.
- A Cisco GMM Cloud Application account with admin privileges.
- A supported gateway deployed on your network and claimed by your organization.
- A device that sends data using the MQTT protocol.
- The devices can be manually connected to the gateway's Ethernet or serial port, or can be available over WiFi.
- Devices are discoverable when connected to a gateway over WiFi or Ethernet. Devices connected over serial port require manual association.
- For Ethernet, attach the device to the following ports:
- IR809—connect to the GE1 port
- IR829—connect to the GE2 port
