About default templates
The default template defines the network settings used when claiming a gateway. There is a different default gateway for each model. You can:
- Change a gateway model's default template settings.
- Use Claim Policies to define a custom default template based on the device's custom field definition.
Revise the system default templates
The default templates include the network configuration that used for a gateway model, unless a different template if selected.
- Select Gateway > Templates.
- Click a Default Template name.
- Edit the gateway network settings and click Save.
- Use the Default Template when claiming a gateway or deploying gateways.
Tips:
- The Default Template will be selected by default based on the device model. You can also select or create a different template.
- You can also use Claim Policies to use a different default template based on the Custom Field definition (see below).

Define custom default templates
Claim Policies allow you to define alternative default templates based on a gateway's custom field definitions.
For example, when claiming gateways, all devices for "Campus A" will use the "Large Truck" template by default. All other devised will use the default gateway for that model.
- This can speed up the task of claiming devices since your can claim gateways without having to select a template.
- You can always select or create a different template, if necessary.
- If the custom field definitions do not match the active Claim Policy, the system default template is used.
Define the custom fields used to group your gateways.
Create Claim Policies:
Select Gateway > Claim Policy.
Click Add Claim Policy and complete the settings:
- Policy Name—A meaningful name, such as "Truck Type Policy".
- Select the group for claim policy—For example, "Truck Type".
- Value—Select the field definition. For example, "Cummings".
- Template(s)—that will be used when any gateway for a Cummings truck is claimed. For example, "Large truck template".
Click + to add an additional value/template combination.
For example, create an additional rule for "Medium" trucks that will use a different template.
Click Save.
Click Activate to activate a Claim Policy.
This policy will be used when gateways are claimed. Only one policy can be active at a time, but you can activate whichever policy is most useful for the gateways you are claiming.
Claim your gateways.
- See claiming a gateway or deploying gateways.
- Select the custom field definitions.
- If the definition matches the active Claim Policy, the defined template will be used as the default template. If the custom field definitions do not match the active Claim Policy, the system default template is used.
