Change the WAN interface
You can change the WAN interface from Ethernet to cellular (or vice-versa) after a gateway is claimed.
The WAN interface provides communication between the gateway and Cisco GMM.
Note: You do not need to re-provision the gateway using Cisco GPT.
Change from Ethernet to Cellular
If using cellular with a private APN, initially connect the gateway over Ethernet so GMM can push the APN config to the gateway.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the following ports to the network:
- IR1101—port GE 0/0/0
- IR807—port FastEthernet 0
- IR809—port GE0
- IR829—port GE1
Insert the SIM cards into the gateway:
Be sure to use a cellular antenna that provides the best signal and connection. See:
Update the gateway's template (or create a new template) so the WAN Interface setting is Cellular. Learn more
- Enter an APN for your SIM card, if required.
Factory reset the gateway. Learn more
Wait for the gateway to come up. When complete, GMM will reconfigure the WAN uplink to the selected setting.
Remove the Ethernet cable, if attached.

- Update the gateway's template (or create a new template) so the WAN Interface setting is No Change. Learn more
- Verify that the Ethernet uplink network supports all network requirements.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from your network to the following gateway ports:
- IR1101—port GE 0/0/0
- IR807—port FastEthernet 0
- IR809—port GE0
- IR829—port GE1
- Remove any activated SIM cards. Do not keep SIM cards installed when using Ethernet.
