Smart Annotations

Smart annotations visually group nodes that share the same tag. This capability helps to illustrate aspects of your topology, such as routing protocols, buildings, or node types, by drawing polygons around groups of nodes with the same tags. Unlike with regular annotations, CML automatically adjusts the shape for a smart annotation based on the positions and assigned tags of the nodes in your lab.

A CML lab with smart annotations

While CML automatically determines a smart annotation’s position and shape based on the nodes with the associated tag, the smart annotation is a distinct item in your lab topology with its own properties. When you first apply a tag to a node, CML automatically creates a smart annotation for that tag and shows it in the UI. If you remove a particular tag from all nodes in your lab, the corresponding smart annotation is deleted from the lab. These smart annotations are part of the lab topology and will be exported with their current state when you export the lab from the CML server. If you open an annotated lab and do not see the expected smart annotations in the canvas, smart annotations may be hidden in your lab.
