Add Geofences
Alert: Cisco has made the end-of-life (EOL) announcement for the Cisco Industrial Asset Vision (IAV).
Use geofences to track the location of GPS-enabled sensors and associated assets in relation to an area on a map. This allows you to create a virtual perimeter for your real-world geographic area, and receive information as sensors and associated assets enter or leave that area. Geofences can be defined using GPS-enabled sensors that are associated with assets. You can view which assets and sensors lie within the geofences that are enabled. Alerts can be generated based on geofence events.
The map where the Geofences are shown can be viewed in the default or the satellite mode.
To add a Geofence
- From the left pane, click Administration > Geofences.
Note: You can view the Geofences option only if you have the required permissions.
- Click Add Geofence and enter a name and description.
- If your browser location is turned on, your current location appears in the map. To change the location, in the search field on the map, type a location name (for example, a street name, city, state or country).
Note: Turn the location services on for your browser. The map will display your location by default when viewing geofences. If location services are turned off, the map will display the default latitude and longitude 0,0 and you must use the map controls to navigate to your location. See the documentation for your browser for instructions to turn on location tracking. To change location services on Chrome browser, refer here. To change location services on Mozilla Firefox, refer here.
- Click Draw. An editable polygon appears on the map. You can click on the white dots along the corners and edges of the polygon and drag the polygon to create a customized location boundary. Click + or - to zoom in and zoom out the map respectively.
- After the geofence is drawn, click Add. The new geofence appears on the map in the dashboard.
Manage Geofences
View a Geofence
View in a list
- From the left pane, click Administration > Geofences.
- In the right pane, in the Geofences page, select a geofence to view its details.
View on a map in the dashboard
- In the map section, from the Map Options drop-down list, under Overlay, select Geofences. All the enabled Geofences appear on the map.
- Click on a geofence to view its status and description.
Enable/Disable a geofence
For an asset or a sensor to be detected in a geofence, the geofence has to be enabled. To enable or disable a geofence:
- From the left pane, click Administration -> Geofences, then select a geofence to enable/disable.
- Click Enable Geofence or Disable Geofence as applicable and then click Yes when prompted.
OR
From the left pane, click Administration > Geofences.
From the right pane, select one or more geofences > Actions > Enable/Disable and then click Yes when prompted.
Notes:
- By default, geofences are in the disabled state when added. This allows the user to create the geofence across multiple sessions or get the same reviewed if required. Once the user is satisfied that the geofence is properly created, they can get the geofence enabled.
- Assets with multiple GPS sensors use the primary sensor to track location in enabled geofences.
- When the GPS-enabled sensor telemetry data is sent to the system, it checks which GPS-enabled sensors and associated assets are part of the enabled geofences.
Edit a geofence
From the left pane, click Administration > Geofences, then select a geofence to edit.
In the Geofences summary page, click Edit Geofence to modify the required fields and the geofence location and click Update.
Note: Even after editing a geofence, the GPS enabled sensors and associated assets that lie within the geofence will be evaluated only when the subsequent telemetry data is sent from the GPS enabled sensors.
Delete a geofence
- From the left pane, click Administration > Geofences, then select a geofence to delete.
- Click Delete and then click Yes when prompted.
OR
- From the left pane, click Administration > Geofences.
- From the right pane, select one or more geofences > Actions > Delete and then click Yes when prompted.
Add a Geofence Alert
The user can add alerts for a geofence. You can configure the alert rule to get alerts when a GPS sensor enters or exits a particular geofence area that has been enabled.
- From the left pane, click Alerts.
- From the right pane, click the Alert Rules tab > Add Rule.
- In the Add Alert Rule page, enter the name for the geofence alert and an optional description in the Alert Name and Alert Description fields respectively.
- In the Choose Alert Type section, select Geofence from the list and click Next.
Note: You can navigate to the next screen only if the system has at least one enabled geofence.
- Select a geofence from the Geofence Name drop-down list.
- In the Define Threshold field, select one or both options for alerts.
- To receive alerts when the sensor comes into the geofence area, select Alert me when the sensor enters geofence area.
- To receive alerts when the sensor leaves the geofence area, select Alert me when the sensor exits geofence area.
- Select an option for the Severity Level. It can be Critical, Major, or Minor.
- Select Auto Clear Alert to clear the alert automatically when it is resolved.
Note: This option is disabled if both the options are selected in the Define Threshold field.
- Click Next. Review the changes and click Add to add the newly created Geofence alert to the system.
