Hardware
Alert: Cisco has made the end-of-life (EOL) announcement for the Cisco Edge Device Manager (EDM).
This section describes the ability of the IR1101 routers to support multiple expansion modules such as the IRM-1100-SP, IRM-1100-SPMI, and IRM-1100-4A2T. See Tech Guidance for more details on configurating devices for multiple modules. The IR1101 is powered by Cisco IOS XE.
For detailed information on initial setup of the modules see: Cisco Catalyst IR1101 Rugged Series Router Software Configuration Guide.
Module descriptions
IR1101 Router: Used for Ethernet, Singular or Dual Cellular. It includes:
- Single and Dual Cellular--1-2 modems with 1-2 SIM cards. See WAN Uplink, WAN SFP for GigabitEthernet or DSL, and Serial communications (one serial port RS232 DTE).
- One serial port (RS232 DTE)
- WAN SFP port (GigabitEthernet or DSL)
IRM-1100-SPMI: Used for GPIO, SFP, and Cellular communications. It includes:
- 1 SFP GE LAN port
- Slot for pluggable module (typically used for a cellular modem)
- 4 GPIO ports
IRM-1100-4A2T: Used for Ethernet and Serial communications. It includes:
- 2 GE RJ45 Layer 2 LAN ports
- 4 Asynchronous Serial Ports (RS232/RS485) (DCE)
IRM-1100-SP: Used for SFP and Cellular use. It includes:
- 1 SFP GE LAN port
- Slot for pluggable module (typically used for a cellular modem)
Note: Regardless of where a module is placed, the ethernet interfaces are not available in a module placed on the bottom of the IR1101.
Four configuration scenarios
There are four main scenarios when setting up the IR1101 with expansion modules. They are briefly described here. For more information on these scenarios, see Cisco Catalyst IR1101 Rugged Series Router Software Configuration Guide.
Scenario 1
- The IRM-1100-4A2T is mounted on the top. In this configuration, you get full functionality out of the Serial and Ethernet ports, which includes four additional Async interfaces and two Gigabit ethernet interfaces.
Scenario 2
The IRM-1100-4A2T is mounted on the bottom. In this configuration, the ethernet ports on the IRM-1100-4A2T are unavailable, but the four Async serial port interfaces have full functionality.
- In addition, this configuration also can have the IRM-1100-SPMI expansion module mounted on the top.
Scenario 3
- The IRM-1100-4A2T is mounted on the top and the configuration also has the IRM-1100-SPMI expansion module mounted on the bottom. In this configuration scenario the IRM-1100-4A2T that is mounted on the top has full functionality. The SFP port on the IRM-1100-SPMI mounted on the bottom will not function.
Scenario 4
- Two IRM-1100-4A2T expansion modules mounted on both the top and bottom. In this configuration, the IRM-1100-4A2T mounted on the top has full functionality. The Ethernet ports on the IRM-1100-4A2T mounted on the bottom will not function. This configuration allows support for eight more Async interfaces and two Gigabit ethernet interfaces.
